history: Naruto’s canon history
alternate history: Naruto grew up as a member of the resistance.

As a boy, his father, Minato Namikaze, was scavenging through rubble when he found a photo album containing the torn, faded pictures of a family that had lived there before madness shook the world. Falling in love with such peace, he made a decision to find and join the resistance. As a member of the group, he rose quickly through the ranks, becoming known for his speed and quick thinking, and was given the codename “Yellow Flash.” He was most famous for regularly raiding the Uchiha base camps and rescuing captured villagers. He met another member, “The Red Kyuubi,” Uzumaki Kushina, who shared his dream of peace for the whole world. She was an energetic woman who wore nine braids in her hair, each representing the nine tails demon inside her cannon counterpart. She wears a necklace a greenish blue necklace and was just as passionate about freeing their people from the iron grip of the Uchiha army.

Thus, they were married and had Naruto. As a young child, Naruto was given the codename “Little Fox,” and grew up training under his father and their extended family to aid the resistance. In the family was his godfather jiraiya, a wise sage, and Kakashi, a man who was ashamed of his face.

When Naruto was seven-years-old, his father brought home a young, nameless boy about his age. Minato had saved the boy along with a group of village children, but as the child had lost his memory, he had no way of telling them where he belonged. Minato and Kushina decided to adopt the boy, and he was given the codename Taka.

The boys became adopted brothers. They did everything together, but they were opposites in every way, and after five years of living together, they still couldn’t stand each other. They were rivals for Minato’s attention and acknowledgement and competed over just about anything. When they would visit other children in the villages, Taka almost always got their attention because of his dark hair and pale skin. Even Sakura, Naruto’s crush, liked Taka! But Taka just ignored her. Naruto never really understood him or his attitude, he only managed to piss him off.
Upon seeing her son’s jealousy and lack of confidence, Kushina gives Naruto her necklace in order to reassure him as their biological son.
When Naruto and Taka were twelve, Kushina was captured and killed by the Uchiha. Naruto was devastated, but he was able to get through it due to Taka’s support. For the next two days, the boys were the best friends with rivalry forgotten. For the first time ever, Naruto believed he was finally happy that Minato had found him and acknowledged him as a brother.

However, two days after Kushina’s death, Naruto left the camp site with his godfather, Jiraiya, for some special training--or so he was told. They returned to find Minato dead with a campsite covered in blood. Confused and agitated, Naruto turned to his godfather for answers, but the older man wasn’t surprised. “Taka was Sasuke Uchiha,” he said, “The second son of the main Uchiha branch. Your father knew this, has known this for a while, and he wanted to have a word with him alone. But...Taka…I mean…Sasuke must have betrayed him.” From then on, Naruto would never forget his godfather’s words, and made it his mission to find and kill Taka--no, Sasuke.
His whole life, his parents had marked his face with red lines--war paint for their little warrior, Minato had called it. To honor his mother and father, Naruto gave himself three scars on either side of his face using a dagger, and ever since then, each time he goes into battle, he traces them with red mud to gain their blessings and guidance.

As a teenager, Naruto became infamous amongst the Uchiha army. They called him “The Uzumaki Fox,” a nightmare combining the stealth of the Yellow Flash and the rage of the Red Kyuubi. He ruined Uchiha plans, damaged their property, and wreaked havoc, as well as stirring up the supposedly controlled public. He was a threat, and the Uchiha were searching for him.

And as he grew up, his grudge against Sasuke grew with him.

As a member of team Kakashi, Naruto was told about the mole that had infiltrated the Uchiha base and was leaking information to them. Using this against the Uchiha’s it was easy to cause havoc on enemy lines. Naruto was even told that the mole had a hidden letter that his father had left him.
One careless day, Naruto was captured by the Uchiha. He was brought before an Uchiha interrogator, and when he looked up, there was his number one foe, the killer of his parents, Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke had him taken to a cell and arranged to question him alone, but when he arrived, much to Naruto’s surprise, Sasuke admitted to being a spy for the resistance. He was very mole who had been leaking information to Naruto all along his youth. He had been hidden amongst the Uchiha by Naruto’s father and was working for the resistance. Sasuke explained that he hadn’t killed their parents; Minato had known that the Uchiha were coming for their missing son, and in an effort to protect both Naruto and the resistance, he had sent Naruto away to safety. Minato had died and the Uchiha had taken Sasuke, but not before Minato had given Sasuke a final set of instructions: to aid the resistance by becoming a spy and to give Naruto a final letter. It was the role he had been grooming him for ever since discovering Sasuke’s true identity.

Once all of the facts were out, Naruto still didn’t completely trust Sasuke. So they made an agreement: Naruto could kill Sasuke if he waited until after they brought down the Uchiha, and in exchange, Sasuke would give him the letter. With some kind of peace treaty in place, they escaped the Uchiha compound together.

personality: Regardless of the harsh environment he was raised in, Naruto believes life should be celebrated. He is loud and energetic. His godfather, Jiraiya, and his father’s lieutenant, Kakashi, both taught him the value of laughter and teamwork. They taught him how to move on after his parents’ deaths.

Naruto always takes time to remember his parents. He carries a photo of how the world used to be, taken from the picture album left to him by his father, and he often looks at it to remind himself of what they’re fighting for. He carries a flask of red powder, which he mixes with mud when preparing for battle before spreading it over his scars in honor of his fallen loved ones. He also wears his mother’s necklace and carries his father’s knife.

Naruto grew up to be a prankster and a tease. He often steals and sneaks around, even when he’s not on a mission, and he likes to pull pranks and set traps. He tries to keep laughing and having fun, despite everything. He is flirty and funny around girls, but he’s in love with Sakura, one of the village girls who aid the resistance by giving them medical care. However, she doesn’t return his feelings, and actually fell for Sasuke when they were children. This just makes Naruto try harder.

At his core, Naruto is idealistic and optimistic. He likes watching children play freely, dreaming of the future he wishes to bring them, hoping the world will laugh as carefree as the children do when they play. He never gives up on things that mean the world to him; in fact, he’s incredibly stubborn. Naruto often acts before thinking and spends a lot of time talking his way out of situations. He’s charismatic, a born leader, and he grew up boasting that one day he would be the ruler of Konoha instead of the Uchiha. He’s naturally likeable, and often acts as a recruiter for the resistance, finding allies wherever he goes. On his wrist, he wears a bracelet with knickknacks and charms on it given to him by people in the various towns he has visited while spreading hope. Most of all, Naruto just wants to help the people of Fire Country and bring the privileges that the Uchiha enjoy to everyone.

abilities/powers:
As a member of the resistance living in the wilderness, Naruto has a few basic survival skills. He can start a fire, and although he is not as fond of fire as Sasuke, he finds that standing around it making plans makes him feel pretty cool. He is also good at hunting--one of the key philosophical quotes he often repeats is, “A man needs meat-dattebayo!”

By necessity, he is also skilled in guerilla warfare. As a rebel working for the resistance, he has lived outside of the utopian city for his whole life, often needing to create and set traps for his enemies. He can steal, pickpocket, and sneak around. He’s also great at hand-to-hand combat due to his high stamina and strong build. He specializes in using short-ranged weapons like short blades, butterfly knives, machetes, etc. The only long-range weapon he can use effectively is a bazooka; the amount of damage it does is the equivalent of his only long-range attack in canon, the Rasenshuriken. Naruto never uses other long-range weapons, such as guns, since he isn’t very good with long-range weapons like kunai or shuriken in canon.

Naruto’s signature move in canon is his shadow clone jutsu, which allows him to multiply into clones, easily thousands if he pushes his limits. However, since his AU version doesn’t have the usual chakra required to make clones, he can instead throw his voice in such a way that it sounds like he is in a different location, such as the alley across the street, or that someone else is coming from that direction, confusing his enemies and distracting them while he escapes.

As a leader, Naruto inspires people. He believes in what he does, and he travels the Fire Country, walking into towns with his head held high, telling stories and inspiring those around him about the hopeful world of tomorrow. He has a way of motivating others and changing their minds that no one else can match. However, his major weakness is that he trusts others too much and often promises more than he can manage. Plus, he never goes back on his word, and this can get him into trouble when those he’s trusted stab him in the back or the things he’s promised prove too difficult to accomplish. So, it could be said that he also has a great “ability” for getting himself into trouble.
